Silk Typhoon Hackers Indicted - Schneier on Security

The US Department of Justice has indicted 12 Chinese individuals for extensive hacking operations over a decade. The group includes eight i-Soon employees, two Chinese Ministry of Public Security officials, and two APT27 (Silk Typhoon) hackers linked to the 2024 US Treasury breach. These hackers targeted US government agencies, Asian foreign ministries, Chinese dissidents, and US media critical of China. The Treasury breach compromised 400 PCs and resulted in the theft of over 3,000 files. Some hackers operated independently, selecting targets before selling information to Chinese government clients, with one indicted hacker expressing preference for American targets to earn money for personal purchases.
