EU Pushes for Backdoors in End-to-End Encryption
The European Commission is pushing for law enforcement backdoors into end-to-end encryption to strengthen member states’ cyber defenses. The strategy document, “ProtectEU,” outlines plans for a roadmap on lawful access to data for law enforcement and a technology roadmap on encryption to explore unlocking encrypted data by 2026. The commission argues that law enforcement needs access to data to effectively fight crime, while technologists and tech giants emphasize the importance of end-to-end encryption for privacy and cybersecurity.
