Cloudflare attributed a multihour outage that disrupted major websites and services on Tuesday to an internal configuration error, underscoring the ongoing risks associated with third-party interdependence in the cloud-computing ecosystem.
The incident, which began at 11:20 UTC on Tuesday and affected platforms such as X, Uber, Canva and ChatGPT, was initially believed to be a distributed denial-of-service attack. Cloudflare founder and CEO Matthew Prince provided a technical breakdown in a company blog post.
According to Prince, the disruption was ultimately traced to “a change to one of our database systems’ permissions, which caused the database to output multiple entries into a ‘feature file’ used by our Bot Management system.”
