More Than 40 Countries Impacted by North Korea IT Worker Scams, Crypto Thefts therecord.media/40-countr… The United States on Monday urged United Nations member states to take a tougher stance against North Korea’s efforts to evade sanctions through IT worker schemes and large-scale cryptocurrency thefts. Eleven countries led a session at United Nations headquarters in New York focused on a 140-page report released last fall, detailing North Korea’s extensive cyber-enabled efforts to finance its nuclear and ballistic weapons programs. The report links North Korea’s IT worker scheme — in which citizens steal identities and secure employment at Western companies — with Pyongyang’s billion-dollar cryptocurrency theft operations. Both activities, alongside several other initiatives, are intended to generate funding for the regime, facilitate weapons procurement, and circumvent multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions. According to the report, more than 40 countries have been affected by either cryptocurrency thefts — which exceeded $2 billion last year — or North Korean IT worker activity.
