UK regulators Ofcom and the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) are demanding that social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube implement robust age assurance tools to prevent children under 13 from accessing their sites. Platforms have until the end of April to report their plans, with regulators considering further action if self-declaration remains the sole enforcement mechanism, as it is easily circumvented and puts underage children at risk.
