German rail services resume after wireless communications outage

Deutsche Bahn restored German rail services early Wednesday after a technical failure in its GSM-R railway communications network halted long-distance, regional and S-Bahn services nationwide for roughly two hours overnight. The company said the outage stemmed from a malfunction during the scheduled replacement of a technical component and has not indicated that the incident was cyber-related. The disruption is operationally significant because GSM-R is a safety-critical communications system used by train drivers, dispatchers and signalling operations, and it highlights the resilience risk associated with aging 2G-based railway communications infrastructure as European operators gradually transition toward newer 5G-based systems.
