ICANN testing tech to let law enforcement access non-public WHOIS info
ICANN is testing SAML-based authentication that would let law enforcement agencies file urgent requests for non-public WHOIS data through its Registration Data Request Service, The Register reports. The mechanism is aimed at cases involving imminent threats to life, critical infrastructure, or child exploitation, with registrars given 24 to 72 hours to respond or deny requests that do not meet the urgency threshold.
