The U.S. Surgeon General has issued a critical new advisory highlighting alcohol as a leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States. Here are the key points:

Alcohol consumption contributes to nearly 100,000 cancer cases and approximately 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the U.S. Scientific evidence demonstrates a direct causal relationship between alcohol use and increased risk for seven types of cancer: breast (in women), colorectal, esophageal, liver, oral cavity, pharyngeal, and laryngeal cancers.

Cancer risk increases with alcohol consumption, with some cancers showing elevated risk at just one drink per day or less.

Despite this evidence, less than half of Americans are aware of the link between alcohol and cancer risk.

The advisory recommends updating alcohol warning labels to include cancer risks and strengthening public education efforts about this critical public health issue.
