Naval Group Probes Alleged 1TB Data Leak Amid Extortion Threats
France’s state-owned defence contractor Naval Group is investigating a reported cyberattack following the leak of 1TB of data on a hacking forum. The threat actor, using the alias “Neferpitou,” initially released 13 GB of sample data, including classified vessel management systems, technical documents, and internal communications, before publishing the full dataset. While the company has filed a complaint and launched an investigation with its CERT team and external cybersecurity experts, it maintains that no intrusion into its IT systems has been detected and that its operations remain unaffected.
The timing of the attack coincides with DarkForums’ surge in popularity following the collapse of BreachForums, now serving as a hub for illicit data exchange. Naval Group, a key supplier to the French Navy and an exporter to allied nations, has stressed the need to verify the authenticity of the leaked files. Analysts caution that the data could be recycled from the 2022 LockBit 3.0 ransomware breach at Thales, raising questions about attribution and credibility. Nonetheless, the incident underscores the persistent threat landscape facing critical defence contractors.
