Windows: most used and attacked — 7× more malware than macOS
In 2025, Surfshark Antivirus recorded 479,000 malware detections, with 87% (419,000) targeting Windows and 13% (60,000) affecting macOS — meaning Windows users faced nearly seven times more malware than macOS users. While this reflects Windows’ larger global market share (71%), it also highlights attackers’ focus on the platform’s greater potential impact. On Windows, PowerShell script (PS1) malware was most common, accounting for 22% of detections, followed by trojans (21%) and viruses (17%). macOS threats were led by viruses (28%) and trojans (26%), showing it is not malware-proof. July saw a major spike in Windows attacks, with detections more than doubling due to PowerShell exploits linked to SharePoint vulnerabilities. Researchers emphasized the importance of regular system updates on both platforms to patch flaws and reduce the risk of exploits.
